The section covering your product profile and the structure and management of your venture were discussed above and in chapter 11. Description and discussion should be through and clear with references made, as appropriate, to supporting material in the appendix. The operation plan incorporates the financial so some additional comments are in order:

As previously noted, your enterprises may need more cost entry lines than used in the example form –simply add the item and the costs in rows. Don’t forget that profitable business have to pray taxes and that you should anticipate and outgoing within the fiscal year period applicable to tax payment. It’s disturbing to see a business suffer because the management failed to foresee tax payment and has to borrow with interest loading to meet the obligations. Whether it might be the regular payment of collected sales tax, the annual or installment payment of taxes on profits, or the payment of the portion of an employee’s salary deducted for income tax, plan for the outgoings. These are demands on your cash and the tax authorities have fairly strong backing to obtain what is due them.

If you make an initial personal or externally obtained investment I the business at the start, it is seen a capital investment and provides a commencing funding basis. It is also relevant to that all encompassing factor –cash flow.

Revenue / sales represent income and mean just that: something comes in orders received are the joy for a salesperson, but they mean little to the financial operations. When you actually get paid by a customer is the time that a sale or transaction has been totally completed unless, perhaps, you are contracting and receive progress payment. If your venture is primarily a cash business such as a small shop, direct personal service, possibly a restaurant, you may not depend on invoice or statement with a payment term offered to the customer.

The venture concept structure and operation matter have been discussed with both accountants and lawyers resulting in several contributions that have been incorporated where appropriate. David and Anne will leave their present jobs when the organization and location of the new venture is prepared and devote their fulltime effort to the enterprise. Security protection equipment is already installed and insurance cover will be obtained.

With the exception of the imported low end market stock the designer setting can be ordered by delivery within approximately 14 working days based on a deposit received form the customer. Retail and restaurant buyers expect to order ahead of a delivery with any large quantities e.g. a new restaurant taking up to 30 days for delivery. Arrangements with the designer / supplier are based on Janware 10% deposit with order and the balance ob acceptance of the entire shipment. Retail and restaurant customer will be extended 15 days net payment terms; shop customer will be offered selected credit card facilities and normal cash terms.

Product marketed through Janware will be subject to a mark up of the 100% on purchase price from the designer / supplier. Aside from the 30% discount extended to restaurant and retailers, no additional price reductions are considered. On the basic of the average estimated sales split between retail, restaurant and private customer the gross profit is calculated to be 41% on sales to provide an annual gross profit against forecast sales of $317,200 of approximately $130,000.

The promotional activity will be comprised of the advertising paralleling that of the shopping centre and mailing of the literature to both retailers and drops in selected area post boxes. Advertising in the local area newspaper can be done when seasonal buying period make it appropriate or if special events arise e.g. Design Fairs, shopping centre sales, etc.

A means of providing both private and retail customers with a showroom facility has been reviewed and it is proposed that a small location in the upper level of the new shopping centre the leased for the dual purpose requirement. The position will permit advertising for personal buyers and it will be convenient, inclusive of parking for retail buyers to visit and be introduced to the several lines of product. The available site comprises 500 sq ft. of open plan space at a rate of $30 per sq ft. per annum on a three year lease with no renegotiation until the end of the first term.

The site will be sufficient for a small office and storage area with display racks and table to exhibit the dinnerware and related products. As a location it will also be central for personal sales visit to regional retail prospect and accessing the product manufacturers in the local area. Although additional inventory storage space will be needed, it is intended that the garage at the Janes’ home will be used.

It is estimated that half the business revenue will initially come from casual store visitors buying for domestic use the balance from retail and commercial sales. Approximately 15 – 30 visitors per day can be expected to visit the shop with an average equivalent day’s sale of two setting for 4 bringing shop revenue of $3600 per week. Based on discounting commercial sales to retailers by 30% the external sales income per week is forecast at $2500 for a weekly gross of an estimated average $6100 (annual sales of $317,200). Some seasonal sales effect will be seen as customers both private and retail will order ahead for holiday and some gift periods. For private customers, a gift register will be offered enabling gift recipient to return to the shop and add or replace items in their sets.
